Come join the Spiral!
Spiralaika is a game for teens (or adults!) inspired by women’s circles, ritual, dance classes, and other kinds of group experiences I’ve been part of. These groups have provided opportunities for deep sharing, learning, play and creativity. I felt inspired to create a tool to support teens to gather intentionally to connect, share and have fun together. I’ve included lots of guided practices from my experiences as a holistic mental health counselor, group facilitator, dance teacher, and parent.
The game also includes an educational component about the menstrual cycle. Players learn about the physiological, emotional, and relational aspects of having a period.
Game Play
The game starts by choosing a “Mystical Muse” archetype card. Each Muse has a name and represents a different topic:
Inspire: Creativity
Heart: Love & Connection
Spirit: Connecting with Divine Mystery
Embody: Sexuality & the Body
Justice: Service & Activism
Earth: Connecting with Nature
Brilliance: Critical Thinking about the World
Vision: Hopes & Dreams
Thrive: Nourishing Choices & Cooperation
Intuition: Intuition & Magic
The Spiralaika board is a beautiful screen printed fabric featuring a spiral. First, players choose an object (not included) to move around the board. The game starts with an opening activity outlined in the Spiralaika Guide booklet. Then players move around the spiral one space at a time, landing on a symbol and choosing a question/activity card. When a player arrives at the closing space, they choose a closing activity from the Spiralaika Guide booklet.
Each topic deck has 30 question cards. There are four other wild card decks that are also drawn throughout the game. They are: Care Cards that prompt acts of care and connection, Party Time Cards that have truth or dare prompts, Moontime Cards that give information about the menstrual cycle along with a prompt, and Shadow Cards that open the door to more difficult topics.
The Guide Booklet also includes bonus rituals, spells, poems and recipes!
What's special about this game??
I believe people of all ages do their best learning in a playful, experiential environment. That's exactly what Spiralaika is~a playful experience! I want to open doors for players to uncover something magical in their bodies, hearts, or imagination.
I also want to provide language and education around consent, which is an important skill for young (and old) people as they navigate their relationships. Woven throughout this game are questions and activities related to relationships.
Spiralaika can be played as a game AND it’s also a great tool for adults who are working with teens! It can be used as a facilitation tool for teachers, therapists, camp counselors, or other adults who work with kids.
